Prevention Programs Overview
These programs are provided to youth at selected middle and high schools in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. Schools are selected based on need and willingness of the administration to participate/embrace the program. It is provided in accordance with School Board policy and procedure and parent/legal guardian permission must be given prior to service provision. Project SUCCESS is an evidence-based program that uses interventions that are effective in reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors.
Project SUCCESS counselors use various intervention strategies including information dissemination, normative and prevention education, problem identification and referral, community based process and environmental approaches. In addition, resistance and social competency skills, such as communication, decision making, stress and anger management, problem solving, and resisting peer pressure are taught. The counselors primarily work with adolescents individually and in small groups, conduct large group prevention/education discussions and programs (Prevention Education Series), train and consult on prevention issues with school staff, link students and families needing substance use treatment or mental health services in the community, etc.
